It Takes Two

Hi! Just wanted to share with you a fashion trend I've been observing here in South Korea....

Couples sporting matching outfits,
right down to their carefully-planned accessories.

All of these photos were taken on the same day, in the same town.
It's a bit too "cute" for my personal taste, but they love it here!

Mmmm... knee socks, stilettos and rugby shirt combo... AWESOME! (Haha... Islay?!!)

Some are slightly more subtle...

...at least varying the colors a bit!

And some couples are just plain outta control!!!
(Just kidding, those are my friends, Dan and Lindsay, from Toronto.)

Upon the Discovery of a Dead Seagull

I was treading mildly down the beach
When whom should I happen upon to meet
All wave-washed up upon the sand
But you, my finely feathered friend!
On many shores, we two have met
And many countries we have seen
But this time, over your sorry life
A tide-like ebb and flow have been.
I must say, I never really liked
your peace-disturbing schemes
You picnic-stealing pirate,
With those awful piercing screams!
Your voracious appetite
Often made my stomach sore
To watch you scarf back bits of rubbish
With a greedy eye for more.
Yet lying here upon the sand
Your heart no longer beats,
And I cannot help but find
A little tenderness in me.
So I draw my heart around yours
With a spindly piece of wood
And wonder how it came to be
Death found you where you stood.
Did you chew on something far too big
That in your throat did catch?
Or perhaps get tangled up
In some idle fishing nets?
Although I do not often tend to scare
sun-bathers with my screech
Nor steal food from unsuspecting
children on the beach-
You and I, at least, have this one affinity
If we could chose, in life and death,
We'd do both by the sea!
So farewell my fine and feathered friend,
As wave upon frothy wave
Creeps in to carry you up and out
To your cold and watery grave.

(Okay, so maybe it's more than a little strange that a dead seagull I found today inspired me to write this silly poem, but I thought its existence, as pathetic as a seagull's life is, should be celebrated somehow... I once wrote a poem called "A Day in the Life of a Trash Can," so surely this one can be considered a step up from that?! Haha...)

Fresh Air Friends

I love days like this... spent mainly in the Great Outdoors! Making the most of the milder, finally-feels-like-Spring weather, a small crew of us caught a $1 bus ride to the bottom of Geoje-do, to a sweet spot called Mangsan. I had been there once before, in Autumn, and was keen to get back... it is about a half-day hike, following the ridge along a small range of mountains, with most of it along the coast, so there are some stellar views! We packed a picnic, and one of the guys brought a camping stove and some marinated meat and veggies, which you wrap up in lettuce leaves and eat (a Korean specialty called bulgogi.) Food really does taste amazing outside in the fresh air, especially after you've worked up an appetite for it! Of course, that was before we got told off (in Korean, haha) for using our camping stove in the park. I guess it was a no-fire zone! Oh well, the meat was cooked, and we had already finished eating most of it by that point. The hike finished up at pretty Myeongsa, a sandy beach with shells littering the water's edge. After chillin' there for awhile, we managed to miss the bus home... even though a valiant attempt was made to run after it and flag it down! Hitchhiking seems easy enough on the island, though, and we soon found a ride with a bunch of Korean Samsung workers, in their faded grey-blue uniforms, on a private Samsung bus. A few of them attempted conversation with us, using their cellphone translators to communicate. The fresh sea air, warm food and time spend with new friends and old... made for an all-around awesome Saturday!

Look The Other Way

Ever feel like one man in a battle?
Ever feel like one tear in a million?
I stumbled upon this music vid today, and was mega inspired! How refreshing to remember that small kindnesses matter, that the choices we make everyday do effect change in the world around us, and that the sacrifices we make for the benefit of another are like beacons of light. Sometimes the giants of social injustice, poverty, and global responsibility loom in my face, threatening to overwhelm me with their enormity. Sometimes I get discouraged by the brokenness in me and all around me, and find myself immobilized by fear. By my smallness. By feelings of inadequacy. And yet... we are who we choose to be. We can choose to look the other way, or choose to walk in the way we know to be true. I was genuinely encouraged by this dude's song today... hope you enjoy it too!

Happy White Day

It is White Day in South Korea... which is the antithesis of Valentine's Day, I guess! In a good way. You see, here in South Korea, Valentine's Day (which falls on February 14th) is a day for girls to give presents, handmade chocolates, candies, and those silly stuffed animals, etc. to the boys they fancy... whereas on White Day (celebrated one month later, March 14th), boys are expected to return the favor! Which is all very funny to watch when you're out and about... storefront windows that were stocked with chocolate and bouquets and other such delicacies only four short weeks ago are now restocked and ready for round two... confectionary companies must love this! Hmmmm... and maybe dentists too. Happy White Day!

Haeundae Beach

A gaggle of girls on a free Saturday
A cityside beach known as Haeundae
Cool sea breezes, but sun at its best
Space to roam free or curl up and rest
Coffee to warm up noses and toes
Convos to lighten the corners of souls
This light and this wind
is a simple heart's pleasure
Even birds know the secret-
together is treasure!

-Fun photos and terrible poetry, gleaned from yesterday's morning meanderings at Haeundae Beach in Busan. Girlz day out. ;0)

Signs of Spring

Blue Sky and Blossoms, Geojedo
There have been a lot of changes going around here in the past little while! Spring is just around the corner, and has been teasing us with some gorgeous weather and warm winds that make you want to skip alongside the schoolchildren, then immediately crushing your spirits with the wicked cold days that follow. If you are not carefully monitoring the weather forecast, this means you might get caught in a rainstorm without a jacket, or find yourself overdressed on a milder day, stripping off layers as the afternoon progresses. And on more than one occasion I have found myself powerwalking to get home from work, shoulders hunched against the cutting wind, and sockless feet frozen for being silly enough to be hopefully underdressed on a winter's day! But the plants and trees seem not to have been fooled... they know for certain spring is coming and some of them have even dared to blossom! I took this photo on the way home from church last weekend; stunning white blossoms against a blue sky. The month of March is also the start of a new school year in Korea, so back-to-school specials are on sale at the local department store, and kids are sporting new haircuts, new shoes, and uniforms, with great anticipation and excitement for new classmates and schools and teachers. I finished up evaluations for my former students last month, and said hello to a whole new crew of children this week, with only a few familiar faces. We have also had a big staff turnover at work, with three of the foreign English teachers finishing up their one-year contracts, and three new ones arriving to take their place. And we have a new Korean teacher as well! So I've been busying myself with farewells and welcome dinners, class introductions, and getting acquainted with some new curriculum. Other changes have been a bit more subtle... like the grey hairs I've been finding on my head! (No jokes.) Or more importantly, the times where I've recognized a change within myself, in thought or in attitude. Often, I'll discover these things in conversation or community with other people, but each time I'm made aware of it, it blows my mind to see this internal evidence, this life-changing power that the grace and love of Jesus is making in me. I know I still have so much to learn, but it amazes me to encounter these signs of spring within, or to observe them in my friends. I love the scene in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe when Aslan breathes life back into the stone statues that the White Witch has frozen in her courtyard. I feel like that gradual, gentle, warmth that eventually flows into all parts and restores to life what once was dead and cold is really truly happening in me. And in many people around me. I know that sometimes we experience what feels like a wintertime or a desert place along our life's journeys, but isn't it a beautiful promise, this hope of eternal Spring? "We do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, inwardly we are being renewed day by day!" (2 Cor. 4:16) Oh, that He would look at me and see, His image reflecting back at Him through me...
